England Squash has released a documentary about the ElShorbagy brothers’ first ever appearance together for their adopted nation – ending with the pair facing the nation of their birth, Egypt, in the final.
‘Brothers in Arms’ charts the build-up to the 2023 World Team Championships in Tauranga, New Zealand, where former world champion Mohamed ElShorbagy and younger brother Marwan played side-by-side for England for the first time.
The hour-long documentary, produced by the SQUASHTV team, offers a peek behind the scenes throughout Team England’s quest for the title – and reveals the deep emotions it stirs in both brothers to be wearing the English flag, as they head inexorably towards a battle for the World Team title against their former compatriots.
‘Brothers in Arms’ offers an insight into the nuanced relationship between the ElShorbagy brothers, who admit that rivalry on court has at times spilled into their off-court dynamic.
The documentary also reveals the spirit between the brothers and team-mates Adrian Waller and Patrick Rooney, as well as then-national coach David Campion and team physio Jade Leeder.
Joey Barrington, England Squash’s Membership and Commercial Partnerships Manager, who commissioned the documentary said:
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with SQUASHTV on this unique documentary and provide audiences with a real insight on what it’s like to compete as a team at the highest level of the game.”
Mohamed said: “Representing England is always a highlight of the season, and playing alongside my brother for the first time under the England flag is a moment I’ll treasure forever.
“I have so many fond memories making this film, and I hope it inspires and motivates players to persevere and strive for greatness.”
