British Squash Nationals 2025: Maliks reach semi-finals

Torrie and Curtis Malik both claimed standout wins on day three of the British National Squash Championships 2025, defeating Georgia Adderley and Tom Walsh in impressive style to reach their maiden semi-finals at the event.

No.5 seed Torrie, who had never progressed beyond the first round of the British Nationals before this year, delivered a power-packed performance on the all-glass court at St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club in Weybridge to overcome No.2 seed Adderley in three tightly fought games.

In a match which was filled with traffic issues in the middle of the court, it was the severity of Malik’s hitting into the front two corners which ultimately proved decisive, with the 21-year-old winning three consecutive tie-breaks by 13-11, 14-12, 12-10 scorelines.

“I’ve played Georgia twice in the last year or so, and we’d both won one, so I was excited to play her today. I couldn’t wait to get on court,” Malik said after the match.

“I feel really good on court – I feel much more confident now when I’m playing. I’m happy with how the off-season has gone, and it has shown here.”

Meanwhile, Torrie’s older brother, Curtis, got the better of England teammate Tom Walsh in a gruelling four-game clash.

World No.30 Malik, who will play No.5 seed Nick Wall in the semi-finals after the withdrawal of Mohamed ElShorbagy from the event due to injury, overcame a second game drop-off to take the intensely fought match by an 11-5, 6-11, 12-10, 11-8 scoreline.

“I really think that Tom is one of the best at backing up a long match the day afterwards,” Malik said after the match. “I remember he backed up a 100-minute match at Europeans and he was fine, so I knew it was going to be a battle today.

“I hope Mo [ElShorbagy] is okay [regarding his injury]. It’s a big season coming up and I wish him well.”

Elsewhere, top seeds Joel Makin and Tesni Murphy claimed commanding straight-game wins to cement their positions as title favourites at the British Nationals, with Makin overcoming No.7 Adrian Waller and Murphy getting the better of No.8 seed Millie Tomlinson.

Makin, on the hunt for a third British Nationals title this week, will face England’s rising star Jonah Bryant in what could prove to be a blockbuster semi-final, after the 20-year-old saw off a stern examination from No.6 seed Patrick Rooney to win in four games.

Murphy’s opponent in the last-four, meanwhile, will be No.4 seed Grace Gear, who delivered an impressive performance to defeat Emily Whitlock by an 11-8, 11-3, 11-5 scoreline.

Alicia Mead and Nick Wall both received walkovers after their respective opponents, Lucy Turmel and Mohamed ElShorbagy, were both forced to withdraw before their matches due to injury.
