Harvard clinch Ivy League double

Harvard hammer Brown to capture the men’s and women’s Ivy League titles

The Harvard men’s team and top-ranked women’s side completed an Ivy League title double with stunning whitewashes at the Murr Center on Sunday.

The men’s team thrashed Brown to claim its second consecutive Ivy League championship and the 36th title in their history, while the Crimson’s women’s team inflicted a 9-0 punishment on Brown’s ninth ranked women’s side to win their 19th title.

Earlier in the week, the men’s team defeated Yale 6-3 in New Haven to secure at least a share of the Ivy League winner’s trophy and they secured top spot outright with a stunning performance against Brown.

Egyptian 21-year-old Ali Farag battled past Blake Reinson, 11-8, 11-5, 12-10 in the top spot, while Brandon McLaughlin cruised past Jack Blasberg 11-2, 11-5, 11-1 in the second position.

Further down the pecking order, Gary Power and Nigel Koh overcame Oliver Booth and Foster Hoff in straight games respectively.

Bryan Koh, Nick Hopcroft, Tom Mullaney, Matt Roberts and Sam Goldberg helped clinch the win in the bottom half of the ladder to ensure Harvard ended the season unbeaten and with a 14-0 record.

Meanwhile in the women’s league, the top-ranked Harvard team joined the men’s side in ending the season unbeaten as they romped to their third title in the past five seasons.

World number 17 Amanda Sobhy led the way for the Crimson as she thrashed Dori Rahbar 11-4, 11-4, 11-0 in the top position.

Katie Tutrone eased past Sarah Domenick 11-3, 11-4, 11-5, while Saumya Karki and Michelle Gemmell recorded straight game victories over Hannah Hay-Smith and Emily Richmond respectively.

Julianne Chu overcame a second game wobble to claim the win in the fifth spot. Meanwhile at the bottom of the ladder, Dileas MacGowan, Isabelle Dowling, Megan Murray and Caroline Monrad swept their opponents aside to end the season on a high.

Both Harvard teams will return to action at the CSA Men’s and Women’s Championship later this month, to decide the national champions at the Jadwin Squash Courts at Princeton University.
