At this year’s Tournament of Champions in Grand Central Terminal New York Peter Nicol has switched his racket for his notepad and has been working with England Squash and Racketball and the English players.
Ahead of the second half of the quarter-finals we asked him what the highlights have been so far…
“There have been some brilliant displays of squash so far but the two battles that really stand out are Peter Barker vs Hisham Ashour and Daryl Selby vs Amr Shabana.
“Peter went 2-0 down and then made a strong comeback to win in five games. An intense and explosive match with the referees involved on the big points. Both players felt aggrieved at certain decisions but generally they evened out over the match. Hisham played extraordinary well; at times he was almost unplayable. Peter dug in and then by the time of the fifth game, stepped forward and took control to win the match comfortably in the end. Great effort by Peter.
“In the second stand-out match Shabana played some of the best squash I’ve seen in a long time against Selby. Daryl did little wrong but was put under extreme pressure and then finished off with clinical shot making by Shabana. It was a hugely impressive performance and showed his intent of wanting to get back to the very top of the rankings again.
It’s great to see three English players in the quarter-finals, although Peter and Nick are playing against each other. James played well against Mohamed El Shorbagy and came away with a solid victory.
“The event is yet again a wonderful experience for everyone, players and fans alike. There’s nothing quite like playing squash in Grand Central Terminal!”
