Casteleyn KIG Campaign Lives Longer In LA
Belgian veteran Stefan Casteleyn maintained his giant-killing run on his home courts at the Los Angeles Athletic Club when he scored his second upset in the KIG Open to earn a surprise place in the semi-finals of the PSA World Tour International 25 event in Los Angeles.
Tournament organiser Casteleyn, a 37-year-old former world No7, recovered from 2/1 down to upset fourth-seeded Egyptian Omar Abdel Aziz 11-8, 1-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8.
Casteleyn, ranked 391 in the world, will now take on England’s Jonathan Kemp, the only seed left in the draw.
Kemp, the second seed from Halifax, also ousted an Egyptian, qualifier Amr Khaled Khalifa, 11-2, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6.
Julian Illingworth leads home interest in the other semi-final where he will meet fellow unseeded opponent Ryan Cuskelly.
New Yorker Illingworth followed his dismissal of top-seeded Canadian Shahier Razik in the first round by defeating England’s Chris Simpson 7-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-3.
Australian Cuskelly earned his place in the last four after removing Egypt’s No3 seed Mohd Ali Anwar Reda 14-12, 11-4, 11-9.
