Public courts bring squash back to North Devon

Organisers have hailed the only publicly available courts in North Devon, in the UK’s south west.

The Atlantic Racquet Centre in Bideford has opened two brand new glass back courts after the closure of North Devon Leisure Centre last year.

No membership will be needed to use the courts, with prices starting at £5 for 30 minutes. Affordable memberships will see prices dropping to as low as £3 per 30 minutes.

ARC partially opened in 2015 and now currently boasts over 1400 members across its 10 tennis courts, four badminton courts, three table tennis tables and fitness gym.

The squash and racketball courts completed the planned racquet sport offering and it’s hoped that interest will be high.

ARC is a community charity with the aim of making racquet sports and fitness accessible and affordable to all local people.

The team at the centre will embark on a formal community launch of the courts in September which will see local schools, disability centres and community groups all being invited to sample the new courts.

General manager Tom Vinall said: “We’re really excited to be opening our new courts on the 12th June this year.

“We’ve had huge interest in squash since it was first proposed we install courts many years ago and we’re thrilled to finally be able to make Squash available to the people of Torridge and North Devon to enjoy.

“It’s testament to the extremely hard work of many of our volunteers, and the continued support of our funders, that this has been achieved.”
