Rising England Squash stars help power disability fundraiser

England squash sisters Freya and Evie Hennings traded the court for the towpath to lead a record-breaking field at the annual Steps for Change Children’s Challenge 2026.

Representing Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club, the rising squash stars acted as official event ambassadors, guiding a community of runners, rollers, and strollers along the River Thames to raise over ÂŁ20,000 for Able Child.

The inclusive 10K event followed a scenic route from Kingston Bridge to Hampton Court Palace and back, bringing together toddlers, school children, teenagers, and families. The initiative highlighted the power of sport in breaking down barriers for children living with disabilities.

Following a pre-event fuel-up provided by independent coffee shop Local Hero, the Hennings sisters helped lead a bubble-filled dance warm-up before setting the pace along the river. As junior athletes climbing the national ranks, Freya and Evie used their platform to champion sports accessibility, encouraging young participants to follow their passions and stay active.

“Having athletes of Freya and Evie’s calibre leading the way was an incredible inspiration for our young fundraisers,” said Lauren Watters, CEO of Able Child. “Their dedication shows what can be achieved through hard work, and their involvement perfectly underscores our belief that every child, regardless of ability, deserves the chance to participate in play, community, and sport.”

The fundraising total will directly benefit Able Child’s network of organisations working across East and Southern Africa, where nearly 29 million children live with disabilities and frequently face exclusion from education, healthcare, and sports.
