One match too many for Charlie after Mexican showdowns
By KIM CLEARKIN – Squash Mad USA West Coast Correspondent
Chris Hanson won his second PSA title this weekend in the Tatleaux de Pera Open at Bay Club Redwood Shores.
Chris won his way to the final comfortably whilst his opponent, local pro Charlie Johnson, had to battle his way there against young Mexican opposition.
Saturday evening saw a rematch of Charlie against Jesus Camacho in the semi final. At one match apiece the stage was set and they did not disappoint.
The momentum shifted several times during a sometimes controversial match. Charlie took an early lead but after a timeout for an eye injury Jesus fought back making the match 2-2.
The final game was tight with many decisions debated. At 9-9 the match could have gone either way but Jesus hit the tin one too many times to give Charlie the match.
The final, in complete contrast was competed very fairly with both players doing their best to play the ball. The semi final though had taken its toll and Chris was just too good on the day for local favourite Charlie and Chris picked up his second title.
Another great weekend of Squash in the Bay Area with a Junior Silver tournament being competed concurrently. Thanks to Tatleaux de Pera Solar and NorCal squash for their support.
