Top seeds land London Under 23 Open titles

Sharpes and Temple-Murray start the New Year on a high in London

World number 64 Charles Sharpes inflicted a third successive final defeat on Scot Greg Lobban to win the London Under 23 Open and his first title in two years.

Sharpes, whose 3-1 victory over Tim Vail in the Premier League failed to prevent Luxfords St George’s Hill losing to Exeter Diamonds on Tuesday night, continued his unbeaten start to the season with a 11-9, 12-10,11-2 victory at the Roehampton Club.

Charles SharpesThe Surrey-based player’s feat was also matched by 19-year-old Tory Temple-Murray, who brushed aside Chloe Mesic of France 11-6, 11-6, 11-1 to triumph in the women’s event.

Sharpes (pictured left), 21, overcame unseeded Welshman Joel Makin in the semi-final and despite squandering a 7-4 lead in the opening game against the second-seeded Lobban, he edged the opening game 11-9 to the delight of his home crowd.

Lobban, who lost in the final of the Open du Gard to Mahesh Mangaonkar earlier this month, pushed Sharpes hard in the second-game but lost a tense tie-breaker 12-10 to put the top seed in a commanding position.

Sharpes had finished runner-up in three finals last year but shrugged off any lingering nervousness to reel off five consecutive points at the start of the third game before closing out the match 11-2.

Earlier in the day, Temple-Murray defeated second seed Mesic in straight games to bounce-back from consecutive first-round exits in December.

London U23The world number 84, who won the European Junior Under 19 Championship last year, dominated proceedings from the outset and cruised through the opening two games 11-6.

An 11-1 mauling in the third game epitomised her superiority and was the perfect response to losing in the final of the Boston Open in her last BSPA tournament appearance on home soil.
