Off The Wall Card Games are an ideal addition for players and coaches
By LEE HORTON – Squash Mad Roving Reporter
The Covid-19 lockdown has given the Squash Mad team a chance to check out some great squash coaching resources and today we shine the light on our friends from Essex, the Off the Wall Squash academy who have produced some impressively innovative ideas.
With a talent line-up that includes top PSA player and England captain Daryl Selby, his sister Lauren, former World ranked No.34 and current national coach of Norway, their dad Paul, one of the UK’s most experienced coaches and Emily Ison, another PSA tour player and a leading coach in Suffolk, you would expect some terrific ideas, and you would be right.
The OTWS team have pooled their experiences and produced a brilliant set of 54 Playing Card Games which can be used by players and coaches to enhance their training and practice sessions.
The games are designed as a deck of A6 size cards with the traditional four suits and two jokers. There’s a small diagram and description of the conditioned game on each card.
These are designed for the intermediate player upwards, and can be dealt out to offer a fun addition to your coaching sessions for juniors or adults. You can also use them in your own practice with friends to give structure to your sessions.
Printed onto high quality card, with rounded corners and matt lamination, they are also delivered in a hard, plastic box for storage.
Daryl explained the process behind the content and designs. “Over the years, I have worked with a lot of coaches and fellow pro players who all have their own favourite conditioning and practice routines. We vary the routines to keep training fresh and interesting and the team here at OTWS decided to tap into that knowledge and produce our playing cards.
“My wife Lucie is a brilliant designer and she turned our rough diagrams and instructions into these great, laminated cards that make up the full pack. We backed the idea with a sizeable investment and have made the cards available to players and coaches everywhere via the Off The Wall Squash website. The feedback has been so positive and encouraging, which is hugely rewarding.”
