PM David Cameron meets Commonwealth Games athletes
Squash stars Adrian Grant and Harry Leitch, plus husband and wife Nick and Sarah Taylor, were among a group of Commonwealth Games athletes and officials who were invited to meet Prime Minister David Cameron today.
The last time Grant and Leitch met was on court in Glasgow, competing in the Men’s Doubles semi-finals. Today they were at No.10 Downing Street for a cup of tea and a sandwich with the PM as he chose to honour those who delivered such a phenomenal Games in Scotland.
Dr Leitch was clearly taken aback by the invitation and Tweeted a panic-stricken plea asking for advice on what clothes to wear.
He clearly should have gone straight to the sartorially-experienced Mr Grant, who, as a Team England ambassador, is clearly used to such events, having already popped into Buckingham Palace for an earlier reception ahead of the Games.
Adrian Tweeted: “It was an honour to meet David Cameron and Sports Minister Helen Grant. Thanks to Team England and Sport England.”
Mrs Grant happens to be my squash-loving MP who called in to The Mote Squash Club (in her Maidstone constituency) a few months ago and got on court with several of our juniors.
Harry Tweeted “Knock, knock,” as he stood outside the No.10 front door.
Adrian added on Facebook:Â I’ve been been very lucky to do something I love that’s enabled me to travel the world and met some very influential and inspiring people.
“But this has topped my bucket list and something I’ll never forget, meeting David Cameron, who after chatting with him, was pretty knowledgeable on his squash! #Honoured P.S. Saw a few Jack Bauer look a likes. — at 10 Downing Street.”
Taylor, who is making massive strides as head coach for the Jersey SRA, also enjoyed his day trip to London with his wife Sarah, a Jersey team-mate who finished the Glasgow Games with her foot in a surgical boot after suffering an injury on court. Â
