There will be no women’s World Championship in 2013 after last-ditch negotiations to stage the event in Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt next month finally failed.
However, the WSA has not given up hope of staging a 2013 championship…even if it has to be played in the first quarter of 2014. They would then stage the 2014 World Open later in the year appeasing senior players who have been increasingly frustrated and vocal at the failure to stage the sport’s blue riband event.
There were hopes that the Soho Club in Sharm el Sheikh, which staged the world open in 2010, could step in to save the day, but the shortage of preparation time and a downturn in the Egyptian economy scuppered the plans for now.
WSA frustrations were not helped by the televised success of last week’s men’s PSA World Championship in Manchester.
