Vote for Nick: Our World Champion needs your votes to land end of year award
By MICHAEL CATLING – Squash Mad Reporter
LESS than a week after claiming the Sports Journalists’ Association Committee Award, three-time World champion Nick Matthew is in line for another piece of silverware after being nominated for the BT Sport Minority Sports Person of the Year award.
Matthew, who is set to return to the top of the world rankings after a two-year absence, has been nominated alongside diver Gary Hunt, mountain-biker Rachel Atherton, surfer Ben Skinner and speedway rider Tai Woffinden.
The award, which is voted for by the public, gives the entire squash community and neutral sport fans the opportunity to help Matthew receive the recognition he undoubtedly deserves.
The England number one has enjoyed another trophy-laden year on Tour and after winning the World Championships for a third-time with victory over Gregory Gaultier in Manchester, he rounded off the year in style by beating Spain’s Borja Golan in the final of the Hong Kong Open.
Matthew was a glaring omission from the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2013 shortlist but after being honoured at the SJA British Sports Awards last week, let’s hope the 33-year-old can land another piece of silverware before the New Year.
